Mahogany has a deep reddish brown color, making it one of the more distinctive sounding woods. It is extremely hard and dense, making the sound it produces particularly warm and full. Denser varieties of mahogany produce tones very similar to Rosewood. Overall, it has a crisp, clear sound with a slight boost in the mid-range frequencies.

The tonal characteristics of solid Mahogany gradually change with age. A tight, focused tone begins to morph into a rich, expressive sound. This process makes aged Mahogany guitars sought after by acoustic purists.
